Edwards Seaweed on BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today: Natural Solutions for Modern Farming

We were delighted to be featured on BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today on 18 June 2025, in a segment exploring how seaweed is making a comeback in British agriculture. As demand for natural, regenerative solutions grows, our family-run business is proud to be part of a new wave of regeneritive and sustainable farming.

The programme highlighted how seaweed, once a traditional remedy for tired soils, is now being rediscovered for its impressive role in restoring fertility, improving soil health, and supporting more resilient crops and pasture.

“Seaweed has been used for centuries on coastal farms, but now we’re seeing a renewed interest in its role as a natural fertiliser,” said presenter Anna Hill, introducing the segment."

Our own Dave Edwards was interviewed, sharing the story of how our family has been processing seaweed for over 60 years. What began as a small operation has grown into a trusted supplier of natural fertilisers and biologicals for farmers and landowners across the UK.

“It’s about working with nature,” said Dave. “We’re not offering a quick fix – we’re supporting long-term soil health with products that nourish the land and help farmers reduce their reliance on synthetic inputs.”

The interview focused on several key benefits of Edwards Seaweed products:

  • Soil structure improvement, supporting deeper root growth and better water retention.

  • Rich mineral content from sustainably harvested British seaweed.

  • Microbial support that encourages healthy, active soil biology.

  • No chemical runoff, making our range safe for use near watercourses and ideal for organic systems.

As interviewer Bob Hockenhull noted, the rising interest in regenerative practices is prompting farmers of all kinds – from organic to conventional – to explore natural ways of feeding the soil without compromising productivity.

“We’ve had strong uptake from organic farms, but we’re also seeing conventional farmers turning to seaweed to reduce input costs and build resilience,” Dave explained.

The segment is a great recognition of what we’ve always believed – that seaweed has an essential role to play in the future of farming.

If you missed it, you can listen again to the episode on the BBC Sounds website (18 June edition).
